Less than 10% of employees today are working in the same company for more than 10 years, according to a recent survey. This number was about 25% about 10 years ago. Surprised ?

What do these trends reflect ?

The only constant will be career change and it will not be unusual to meet people who may change more than 10 jobs or more in their career. I see two challenges here :-

1. For the individual, the shifts will be not neccessarily be linear, given the disruptive pace of business environment. So , if started your career in a specific function , you may end up across functions based on the organisations needs and your interest.

2. For the leadership , this poses a bigger challenge in getting talent that is required for shorter cycles.

So the shifts can involve movement from generalist role to specialist role, forced to voluntary, permanent to assignment based, calling from high degree of flexibility and willingness to learn , unlearn and relearn in short cylces.

Given this scenario, what can leaders do foster a learning environment and individuals do to remain prepared for such shifts ?
